‘Questioning’

‘Questioning’ is a crucial ‘Principle of Coaching’…as it empowers the players to understand the game better…to increase their knowledge…to come up with the answers…

It also provides you as coach the opportunity to see how the players view the game…to check their knowledge…to check their understanding…

The Coaching Process

1st Question:     What are we doing well…?

2nd Question:    What are we not doing so well…?

3rd Question:     What can we work on…?

Follow these starter questions up with open ended questions to the players’ answers that guide the players… ‘What’…’Why’…’Where’…’When’…’How’…’Where’…?

Allow the players the opportunity to think about the question…

The hardest part is that you as a coach know the answers…you know where you want to take the players to in their understanding…you may feel you want to step in and give the players the answers…

The challenge is to ask questions that guide the players…lead the players…to come to the same point…that lets them come up with the answers…their answers…

Patience is key when asking questions and waiting for the players’ responses…

Ask meaningful questions…
