Wayne Smith (New Zealand All Blacks 2011 RWC Winning Coach and The Chiefs Back-to-Back Super Rugby Champions 2012 and 2013 Coach) set me off on ‘My Crusade’ of analysing ‘Try Scoring Trends’ in Rugby Union matches after his Conference Presentation on ‘Creating a World Class Attack’ in October 2012…
He shared with the audience his analysis of the ‘Try Scoring Trends’ from the 2012 Super Rugby Season…

As I started on this ‘Crusade’ of analysing tries…I evolved Wayne’s framework adding what the reasons are for the tries being scored (Principles of Attack) and the tries being conceded (Principles of Defence)…so I added graphs of ‘Why tries are scored?’ and ‘Why tries are conceded?’…to see the bigger picture…and to help to identify any ‘Trends and Patterns’…thus being able to adapt my coaching to increase the chances of my teams to score more tries and concede less tries…
