This is a revolutionary way to view the game\u2026a ‘Paradigm Shift’\u2026something that I have not seen so far anywhere in the world of coaching…<\/p>\n

What does this actually mean\u2026?<\/p>\n

Here are the Coaching Manual ‘textbook’ answers:-<\/p>\n

Attack<\/strong><\/p>\n

1. Gain Possession;<\/li>\n
2. Go Forward;<\/li>\n
3. Provide Support;<\/li>\n
4. Maintain Continuity;<\/li>\n
5. Apply Pressure;<\/li>\n
6. Score.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

   Defence<\/strong><\/p>\n

   \n
   1. Go Forward;<\/li>\n
   2. Provide Support;<\/li>\n
   3. Apply Pressure;<\/li>\n
   4. Regain Possession.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      What do these textbook answers really mean\u2026?!<\/p>\n

      I believe they miss the point of what the game of Rugby Union is really about\u2026!<\/p>\n

      View Number One: Aim of the game\u2026?<\/strong><\/p>\n

      • Score more points than the opposition.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        View Number Two: ‘Principles of Play’<\/strong><\/p>\n

        \n
        • ‘To Score Tries’ in Attack;<\/li>\n
        • ‘To Stop the Opposition from Scoring’ in Defence;<\/li>\n
        • If you do this then you will ‘Score more points than the opposition’.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

          If you do not start with the end in mind how on earth are your teams going to score tries and stop the opposition from scoring\u2026?<\/p>\n

          This philosophy\u2026this approach\u2026is backed up by the success of the Denstone College from 2009 to 2012\u2026across 4 seasons\u2026compared to the period from 2005 to 2008…<\/p>\n

          The key observations are:-<\/p>\n

          • In 10 less matches;<\/li>\n
          • On a much tougher fixture list;<\/li>\n
          • 371 more points were scored;<\/li>\n
          • 818 less points were conceded;<\/li>\n
          • 1189 difference in Points Difference;<\/li>\n
          • 12.2 more points were scored on average per game;<\/li>\n
          • 13.8 less points were conceded on average per game;<\/li>\n
          • 26.1 difference in Points Difference on average per game;<\/li>\n
          • 41 more tries were scored;<\/li>\n
          • 135 less tries were conceded.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

            This period was based on ‘Principles’\u2026’Principles of Attack’\u2026’Principles of Defence’…<\/p>\n
