Part iv"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>\u2018Principle of Defence\u2019: \u2018Back 3 Pendulum\u2019 Defensive System<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">At the same time the other real challenge then of a coach is to design and plan &#8216;Deliberate Practices&#8217; that provide players to work on the key areas, i.e. the 20%, that makes up the 80% of the results, i.e. the \u2018Principles of Play\u2019, skills and techniques, so that you create the best possible environment for your players to become that best that they can be&#8230;knowing that they are working on things that are going to have a really big influence\/impact in a game&#8230;and make a difference against the players that they are playing against&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>How do you design these \u2018Deliberate Practices\u2019&#8230;that provide players to practise the \u2018Back 3 Pendulum\u2019&#8230;in game-like situations&#8230;?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>First let us take a look at what we mean by a \u2018Back 3 Pendulum\u2019 Defensive System:-<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What do we mean by \u2018Back 3\u2019&#8230;?<\/li>\n<li>What do we mean by a \u2018Pendulum\u2019&#8230;?<\/li>\n<li>What do we mean by a \u2018Defensive System\u2019&#8230;?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>What do we mean by \u2018Back 3\u2019&#8230;?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>\u2018Back 3\u2019 means that it is 3 players that are at the back of the defending team.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The key question then is: WHO are these 3 players&#8230;? Everyones\u2019 answer is going to be the Full-back and 2 Wingers&#8230;correct&#8230;?<\/p>\n<p>So I ask you this question: What qualities would you like to see in these \u2018Back 3\u2019 players&#8230;?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Do your \u201cFull-back\u201d and \u201c2 Wingers\u201d meet all your criteria&#8230;? London Irish (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=vH-c3hYfU4k\">https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=vH-c3hYfU4k<\/a>).<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">The size of the area depends on the factors mentioned above, plus how \u201cFAST\u201d or \u201cSLOW\u201d you would like your players to carry out the \u2018Deliberate Practice\u2019. (Slowing down the \u2018Deliberate Practice\u2019 is an excellent tool to help the players with communication, timing, patters, and getting used to the \u2018Back 3 Pendulum\u2019 Defensive System.)<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">The width of the channel again depends on all the factors mentioned above, e.g. if you are doing the \u2018Deliberate Practice\u2019 using WALKING then you will create a NARROW channel&#8230;if you are using SPRINTING then you will create a WIDER channel&#8230;;<\/li>\n<li>The 1st defender crosses the dotted line once the 1st attacker has caught the ball;<\/li>\n<li>The 2nd defender crosses the dotted line once the 2nd attacker has caught the ball;<\/li>\n<li>The 3rd defender crosses the dotted line once the 3rd attacker has caught the ball;<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">The key for the defender is to TRACK the attacker correctly&#8230;by keeping INSIDE the attacker so that the attacker can not step inside&#8230;so that it forces the attackers closer and closer to the \u201cTouchline\u201d&#8230;allowing the defenders to use the \u201cTouchline\u201d as a 4th defender:-<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a in BOTH directions&#8230;by just swapping the \u201cTouchline\u201d and dotted line around.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">To progress this \u2018Deliberate Practice\u2019 one stage further you could create the scenario where the attacking players could attack LEFT or RIGHT, creating some unpredictability&#8230;like the diagram below:-<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a will depend on how FAST or SLOW you carry out the \u2018Deliberate Practice\u2019, i.e. the SLOWER the practice&#8230;the SHORTER the distance;<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">The key for the defender each time is to TRACK the attacker correctly&#8230;by keeping INSIDE the attacker so that the attacker can not step inside&#8230;so that it forces the attackers closer and closer to the above;<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">The width of the channel again depends on the factors mentioned above, e.g. if you are doing the \u2018Deliberate Practice\u2019 using WALKING then you will create a NARROW channel&#8230;if you are using SPRINTING then you will create a WIDER channel&#8230;;<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">The starting position of the \u201cMiddle\u201d defender, i.e. the distance between the player and the dotted line, will depend on your \u2018Practice Design\u2019, e.g. if the players are sprinting then the distance would be around 40m;<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">The starting position of the 2 \u201cWide\u201d defenders is 5m or 10m behind the dotted line AND right next to the \u201cTouchline\u201d on either side;<\/li>\n<li>The starting position of the attackers is in the middle of the \u201cpitch\u201d 5m from the dotted line near the \u201ccoach\u201d;<\/li>\n<li>The \u201cMiddle\u201d defender can start moving once the coach has passed the ball to one of the attacking players;<\/li>\n<li>The \u201cWide\u201d defenders can start moving once the ball carrier has passed the dotted line;<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">The key thing in this \u2018Deliberate Practice\u2019 is for the \u201cMiddle\u201d defender to TRACK the attacker correctly&#8230;by slowing the player down&#8230;allowing for the \u201cWide\u201d defenders to catch up&#8230;by trying to force the ball carrier to weave in and out = longer distance ran + slows the ball carrier down&#8230;while the \u201cWide\u201d defenders sprint as fast as they can in a straight = short distance ran + catch up ball carrier&#8230;meaning that there are now 3 defenders trying to stop the attacking team&#8230;rather than one solo defender, i.e. the \u201cMiddle\u201d defender&#8230;thus increasing the chances of the defending stopping the opposition from scoring and the attacking NOT scoring a try!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p the \u2018Back 3 Pendulum\u2019 Defensive System and I would go as far as to say that it is the most important part of the game because it is quite often the difference between winning and losing a
