{"id":22,"date":"2014-02-18T03:18:28","date_gmt":"2014-02-18T03:18:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/nickhillcoaching.com\/?page_id=22"},"modified":"2015-02-23T17:49:35","modified_gmt":"2015-02-23T17:49:35","slug":"principles-of-play","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"http:\/\/nickhillcoaching.com\/?page_id=22","title":{"rendered":"Principles of Play"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This is where I strongly believe that I view the game differently compared to the vast majority of rugby coaches out there&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>I firmly believe in that the game of rugby is based on &#8216;Principles&#8217;\u2026&#8217;Principles of Attack&#8217;\u2026&#8217;Principles of Defence&#8217;&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>This is a revolutionary way to view the game\u2026a &#8216;Paradigm Shift&#8217;\u2026something that I have not seen so far anywhere in the world of coaching&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>What does this actually mean\u2026?<\/p>\n<p>Here are the Coaching Manual &#8216;textbook&#8217; answers:-<\/p>\n<p><strong>Attack<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Gain Possession;<\/li>\n<li>Go Forward;<\/li>\n<li>Provide Support;<\/li>\n<li>Maintain Continuity;<\/li>\n<li>Apply Pressure;<\/li>\n<li>Score.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Defence<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Go Forward;<\/li>\n<li>Provide Support;<\/li>\n<li>Apply Pressure;<\/li>\n<li>Regain Possession.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>What do these textbook answers really mean\u2026?!<\/p>\n<p>I believe they miss the point of what the game of Rugby Union is really about\u2026!<\/p>\n<p><strong>View Number One: Aim of the game\u2026?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Score more points than the opposition.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>View Number Two: &#8216;Principles of Play&#8217;<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>&#8216;To Score Tries&#8217; in Attack;<\/li>\n<li>&#8216;To Stop the Opposition from Scoring&#8217; in Defence;<\/li>\n<li>If you do this then you will &#8216;Score more points than the opposition&#8217;.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you do not start with the end in mind how on earth are your teams going to score tries and stop the opposition from scoring\u2026?<\/p>\n<p>This philosophy\u2026this approach\u2026is backed up by the success of the Denstone College from 2009 to 2012\u2026across 4 seasons\u2026compared to the period from 2005 to 2008&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/nickhillcoaching.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Denstone-College-1st-XV-Results.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-754\" src=\"http:\/\/nickhillcoaching.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Denstone-College-1st-XV-Results-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Denstone College 1st XV Results\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/nickhillcoaching.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Denstone-College-1st-XV-Results-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/nickhillcoaching.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Denstone-College-1st-XV-Results.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The key observations are:-<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In 10 less matches;<\/li>\n<li>On a much tougher fixture list;<\/li>\n<li>371 more points were scored;<\/li>\n<li>818 less points were conceded;<\/li>\n<li>1189 difference in Points Difference;<\/li>\n<li>12.2 more points were scored on average per game;<\/li>\n<li>13.8 less points were conceded on average per game;<\/li>\n<li>26.1 difference in Points Difference on average per game;<\/li>\n<li>41 more tries were scored;<\/li>\n<li>135 less tries were conceded.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This period was based on &#8216;Principles&#8217;\u2026&#8217;Principles of Attack&#8217;\u2026&#8217;Principles of Defence&#8217;&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Principle of<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Attack: To Score Tries\u202641 more tries!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Principle of Defence: To Stop the Opposition from Scoring\u2026135 less tries!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The &#8216;Principles of Play&#8217;
