‘Teaching Games for Understanding’ (‘TGfU’)

If you ever wonder why you should use ‘Teaching Games for Understanding’ (‘TGfU’) in your coaching, have a look at the following 2 videos…

1st 5 minute ‘game’: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eEviZ7lgR6M

5th (Last) 5 minute ‘game’: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2AmFui0D6zM

…and compare the differences between the 2 videos.

The players are playing the same ‘game’ with the same “rules”…of which the only “rule” is…”you must have 2 hands on the ball in attack”.

The key reasons for this difference are:-

  • What has gone on in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th 5 minute ‘games’…;
  • The communication approach with the players…;
  • The style of coaching…and teaching…;
  • The ‘Practice Design’…;
  • The time allowed for the players to just “play”…
